4 Myths: What "Mature" Women "Should" and "Shouldn't" Wear

I often hear some pretty outrageous statements in the media about what “mature” women “should” and “shouldn’t” wear when it comes to their appearance.

Today I’d love to bust 4 of these myths and show you some wonderful examples of how you can brush away those silly ideas and embrace your unique style formula.

Myth #1:

Mature women should wear brighter and more colourful clothes.

This simply can’t be true as we all have different complexions and colouring we are born with.

It doesn’t matter what age you are. If bright colours don’t suit your complexion, they will actually make your skin look dull. So first and foremost, work out your colour palette and decide what colours will compliment you, regardless of your age.

Our colour palettes are determined by 3 categories:

1. Warm-cool undertone.

Everyone has got an undertone – it’s usually either cool, warm or neutral. It’s not the amount of tan we’ve got. It’s not about how light or dark our skin tone is.

An undertone is the colour under your skin. Your undertone can be warm, cool or neutral.

A cool undertone usually comes up with the hints of blue, pink, or red complexion. A warm undertone is more peachy, golden, or yellow. If you’ve got a neutral undertone, both warm and cool shades work on you.

2. Light - Dark.

If your hair and eyes are darker shade - you’d be better off picking darker, deeper colours, if you’ve got fair complexion with blond hair - go for lighter shades. This parameter is called Value and it varies between Light and Deep (dark).

3. Bright - Muted

If you’ve got high contrast in your appearance, perhaps red hair, or bright eyes, it’s likely that bright colours suit you more.

Myth #2:

You should keep your outfits simple and classy.

Some of us look best in a clean, sleek look, others work best with natural, deconstructed lines or in quirky, eccentric styles. Again, it has nothing to do with age. I recently got into the Kibbe shapes system, developed by the stylist, David Kibbe back in the 80s. It’s still very relevant now. What I like about it is that he connects our essence and character with our shape and the way we dress.

Myth #3:

Say no to jeans.

Jeans are comfortable and make up for amazing casual, young looks and I don’t see any reasons for you saying no to them if that’s what you like and what you feel yourself in. There are also lots of different cuts, which suit any shape, take your pick and go for it!

Myth #4:

Tone down the animal print.

Coming back to your style. There are 2 ways you can incorporate animal print into your wardrobe:

  1. If you are more of a dramatic type and like animal print, go for it. My advice, don’t include patent leather and red in the same outfit as your animal print. I always like to tone down the outfit and make it look like you didn’t have to try too hard and you are just naturally great at throwing things together.

  2. If you love fashion and experimenting with prints/textures/layering, try including 2 or 3 different prints in your outfit. You can even have 2 different animal prints. Here is how: one can be bigger and bolder, the other one more dainty and small. Or one can be normal leopard print and the other one purple leopard print.
