Layering and how to tackle it

I get asked all the time for advice on how to layer clothes so that you look effortlessly stylish and feel confident, no matter the situation. As speakers, we layer not just for unpredictable weather — we also layer for impact.

Layering isn’t about stuffing more clothing on. It’s about crafting depth, intention and confidence in your appearance so that you never feel uncomfortable stepping into the spotlight.

There are two big reasons layering matters for women who speak professionally:

  • It gives you flexibility throughout your day — from early‑morning travel to venue air conditioning and after‑party receptions.

  • It makes your outfit interesting and intentional rather than flat or forgettable on camera.

But is layering for everyone?

The honest answer is that the type of layering you choose should support your body shape and message.

Below are tailored ideas that work with your natural proportions and with how you want to show up and be remembered:

  1. Tall and lean.

Would you describe yourself as tall and angular, with long arms and legs and long hands and feet? In that case, opt for minimal lines and long silhouettes. Go for smooth textures, fabrics which can hold shape, avoid soft knitwear or cable knit. Avoid too much texture. Avoid lots of layers - it’s best to opt for 2 or maximum 3 long layering pieces. Avoid too much print - opt for colour blocking instead or for layering of the same colour. See some ideas below.

2. Strong.

Would you describe yourself as strong, broad-shouldered?

In that case opt for lots of texture, lots of layers, hats and asymmetry. Prints are also your friends, you can clash them. Natural feel fabrics and prints look perfect on you. You can carry out all sorts of knitwear, even with holes in.

3. CLASSIC.

Are your features symmetrical? Have you got a moderate height, shoulders? Is the difference between your bust, waist and hips moderate too? Then opt for minimum layering and always make sure you’ve got smooth texture within your outfit. Messy style isn’t for you. If you want to opt for knitwear, make sure it’s premium quality, as well as other fabrics you are wearing. Go for neat hairstyles. When layering, make sure there is symmetry within your look to support symmetry in your natural features. If you are using texture, make sure there is still a sleek element within your look, for example your hair.

4. Petite.

Are you petite? Can you describe your face features as playful and childlike?

Then add small cute elements into the mix, like little collars or scarves. Prints are your friends. You can go ahead and mix in a few. Avoid very oversized shapes, as you will drown in them. Add fun, playful elements into your outfit to support your playful essence.

5. Curvy.

Have you got softness and roundness within your body shape? Is the difference between your bust, waist and hips quite significant?

Then always add waist emphasis into your layering. Add softness into the shape. Avoid fabrics, which are too rigid. The softness in the outfit will look organic with your soft shape.

I hope that helps! Feel free to reach out with any questions.
